The 1983 A1 was the first ZX1100 variant of the GPz line, carrying over the air-cooled 1,089 cc engine with digital fuel injection and a higher compression ratio, plus a new frame and a Uni-Trak rear suspension. A 1983 road test found it fast and exhilarating on the banked high-speed circuit but expensive to run, with some ergonomic shortcomings. The test also reported quarter-mile times that differed from the figures claimed by other magazines.
